Cubist art is known for its still lifes, but major practitioners of the movement like Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Juan Gris created innovative portraits as well.
Here we have some representative examples of Cubist portraiture, and how they relate to the movement as a whole.
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the most well-known artists of Cubism, and one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon echoes the work of earlier artists like Paul Cezanne, who likewise painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits using jagged angular forms, as well as traditional African masks, both of which deeply influenced Pablo Picasso.
Works like this one and his 1906 portrait of the author Gertrude Stein are forerunners of the abstract style of Cubism, where forms are broken up into angular and geometric shapes and then reassembled.
